Kiss Me Kate - January 23 - February 8

Kiss Me Kate

Running January 23 – February 8 and directed by Rand Smith, Kate promises to bring you a delightfully funny evening’s entertainment.  This play within a play transports you from Shakespeare to the shake and pour era of Cole Porter.

Kiss Me Kate - the Tony award winning play ran for over 1000 performances on Broadway. It’s a happy ever after story, but not a first, and there in lies the fun. First there is the egotistical director and the diva, who’s also, his ex-wife. You know the routine, he loved her, and she hates him. That alone can make for a fun filled evening, but wait there’s more. There’s Bill who loves to gamble, and conveniently puts down Fred’s name on the IOU, very conveniently when the mobsters come to collect. And in between all of this is Shakespeare… who could ask for anything more.

The 1959 original cast album of Little Mary Sunshine asks “What ever happened to the operettas?” The answer is that times have changed and musicals are very different now. This show however pokes gentle fun at the old shows. It’s the turn of the century and the heroine is infinitely pure both morally and vocally (soprano). The hero is a rugged forest ranger captain with a big, baritone voice. Support comes from the juvenile leads: a corporal and a maid who sing and tap or soft shoe. There are 6 other rangers and 6 proper young ladies, all of whom have character names and dialogue and numbers without any principals. The retired German opera singer, a mezzo, is wooed by a mature baritone. There are 3 Indians in non-singing roles, 1 is the chief and another is the villain.

The director, Bill Myerholtz was active many years as actor/singer and director with Masque of Temple Terrace. He won a Lary award for directing The Lion in Winter for Kestrel Production. He has an English and Theatre degree and over 30 years experience in college, semi-professional and community theatre. 16 bars of music would be appreciated and music from the show will be taught. Monologues not needed.

Production Dates: April 24-May 10, 2009
